I like that show where they solve all the murd3rs ([info]cedarlibrarian) wrote,

I have not slept well in days. Last night was mostly okay. Went to bed at 2:30 ish and got up at eight. Percy wanted to stay up and talk for a while, but I made him go away. Weasleys. Go figure. And speaking of Percy, [info]aesc and [info]metaphoracle, consider this an official plea for my fourth chapter and a first part of someone's long overdue birthday fic.

Genetic engineering seems to be the big thing in YA lit these days, with House of the Scorpion, Dr. Franklin's Island, Taylor Five, and Double Helix all getting good reviews, lots of publicity, etc. Funny that at a time when books that center on religion (different aspects, i.e., The DaVinci Code and other Dan Brown books and the Left Behind Series) dominate the adult bestseller list, science and technology are some primary contemporary themes in teen lit. After I finish Tithe, I have Kissing the Rain by Kevin Brooks and The Last Chance Texaco by Brent Hartinger. Also, I will finish listening to The Two Towers at the end of this week and The Return of the King is sitting on my half of the ref desk. The more I listen to those books, the more LotR icons of [info]pegkerr's I want to take, now that I know how the phrases fit into the book. Yay books. So many books and so little money. [info]skalja will be happy to know that my two Fables compilations arrived on Monday and I get to start reading them.

The 2004 ALA Teen Read Week theme is "It's Alive @ Your Library," a sort of amalgamation of horror, suspense, mystery, science-fiction, etc. How very tempted am I to do a library Fear Factor and make my Teen Advisory Board eat worms? I won't, of course, but my sick mind thinks it's funny.

Last Saturday, I went to Books of Wonder with my coworker Amy. The following are conversations I had with authors.

1) Fangirling, starring Cedar and Edward Bloor:

Cedar: Hi.
Edward Bloor: Hello, thanks for coming.
Cedar: As a librarian, I really appreciated Story Time.
Edward Bloor: Thank you. Where are you a librarian?
Cedar: TownIWorkIn, New Jersey.
Edward Bloor: I used to live in Trenton.
Cedar: I won't tell.
Edward Bloor: (giving Cedar her book and laughing) Well, I live in Florida now.
Cedar: (runs out of intelligent things to say and smiles benevolently)

and later:

Cedar: Sorry to interrupt, but I just had to ask: You did name George (one of the main characters in Story Time) after Cutter and Dewey, right?
Edward Bloor: Yes I did. Only a librarian would notice that.
Cedar: Okay thanks I need to leave before I drool on the table.

2) I really need to read this book, starring Cedar and [info]blackholly

Cedar: Hi.
Holly: Hi. *signs book*
Cedar: *says something stupid about cool signatures, tries not to curl into small mortified ball, as Edward Bloor is about two feet away.*

3) Hopelessly cool authors, starring Cedar and [info]libba_bray

Cedar: Hi.
Libba: Hi! *signs book* You have a cool name.
Cedar: Thank you. Old family name.
(Amy asks some questions about Libba's book, we walk away for a bit, we go back because Amy and I want to ask her about possibly visiting the library)

Libba: So what have you read lately? What's good in YA?
Cedar: ...

Okay, so how many YA books do I read in any given week? Two? Three if I'm having a good week, and I couldn't name ONE? I am a loser. But we had much fun. Libba is awesome.

Most recently from [info]alchemine: I want everyone who reads this to ask me 3 questions, no more, no less. Ask me anything you want. Then I want you to go to your journal, copy and paste this allowing your friends (including myself) to ask you anything. The fun is not in answering, but in seeing what crazy things people ask you.

the more LotR icons of pegkerr's I want to take

::amused:: actually, I have to confess when I opened up my fpage and saw the icon, my first thought was that the post *was* from [info]pegkerr.

*giggles* I love those icons she makes, but yes, it confuses me too when someone else on my friends page uses one. She made me the one I use that says "Deep roots are not touched by the frost," but after she made it, I realized the line was "Deep roots are not reached by the frost." Ah well. Same sentiment, right? And it's not like Tolkien is going to come beat me for it.

Well, shoot. I'll have to add that to my list of things to correct, once I can convince Rob to add the icon-making program back to the laptop so I can make more icons.

I really want to make one that says "I am a Shieldmaiden, and my hand is ungentle."

*headdesk* I should have told you that the wonderful [info]agentrosecotton fixed it! I'm using the fixed version here. And I still owe her a drabble because I am the worst fandomer that ever walked the earth. Or Middle Earth.

1) When did you last use your birthday present?
2) Are you ever going to write that damn Judas/Peter bunny I gave you over a year ago?
3) What's for dinner?

1) Last week sometime, I think. Not sure.

2) Yes, after I finish Laudanum, Where all the Ladders Start, Swords to Plowshares, Along Came a Spider, and the still-titleless Cruciatus Curse fic.

3) Cheerios and yogurt.

1. What is the funniest thing that's ever happened in your tenure as a librarian?
2. Fish or chicken? or neither?
3. If you weren't a librarian, what would you be?

1. At my last job, I ran a teen poetry reading every month. I had one patron, an eighth grade boy, got up and read a silly love poem he wrote. He stayed after the poetry reading to help me clean up, and said to me, "You know, I was going to say that the poem was about you, but I didn't." I smiled and said, "That's very sweet, but I don't think Mr. Cedar would like it." Eighth grader replies, "Oh, I could take him." I just about fell over laughing.

2. Fish! Nice fishes swimming in the pool, precious.

3. An opera singer. I actually have a really good voice. Or a writer. If I was smart enough to get into law school, I'd be a lawyer.

I love your answers! That was so sweet! Any woman worthy of an eigth grader's crush is awesome in my book!

Nice answer. My sister would have said, fish with lemon and dill

What lovely talents!

thanks!

1) Why did you pledge a sorority?
2) If you were a Muppet, who would you be?
3) Det. Mike Logan, Det. Rey Curtis, or Det. Ed Green?

1) I was bored? Seriously, I'd never thought about it until about a week before Rush, when my Rho Chi convinced me to give it a try. I did, and really liked the Kappas, so I joined. Three years later, it was a totally different group and I was pretty unhappy there, but I figured I was leaving soon. Being an alum is great.

2) Janice

3) Ooh, that's tough. Curtis has the looks, but Logan has the attitude. Let's split the difference. Green.

*scribble* You realize, of course, that from this day forward every book you mention in your LJ goes down on my super-long reading list? *g*

[info]cedarlibrarian

April 15 2004, 08:15:54 UTC 8 years ago

Whoa, Nellie. Before you start scribbling, you must read Rats Saw God by Rob Thomas, The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, and Monster by Walter Dean Myers. After that, you're good to start on the list.

Woot! Done, done, and done. I read numbers one and three while you were my roommate, too. *g*

Fair is fair.

How did you meet Mr. Cedar?
If you could indulge yourself in one massive, totally selfish purchase (price no object), what would it be?

Did you ever participate in another fandom?

1) I answered his online personal ad. I was 20 minutes late for our first date (had to change after work and then got stuck in traffic) and the relationship almost never happened.

2) A furnished penthouse in Manhattan with a view of Central Park. Or something involving a lot of diamonds.

3) Does it count if I was under the age of thirteen? I wrote my first Mary Sue at eight (Thundercats), and my first fanfic (and another Mary Sue) at ten (Monkees). I wrote my last fanfic before HP (and my last Mary Sue, ever!) at eleven (Degrassi Jr. High).

I have now spilled my darkest fandom secrets all over my LJ. Thank heavens there was no home internet in those days.
